When President Obama isn't interested in a subject, he tries to get rid of it. His cancellation of the Constellation/Ares project as well as the F-22 show that he doesn't get technology very well. This week the space supporters fought back, and his team had to cobble up some half-measures to keep those voters happy. Go to Mars in 2025? Why is it every President pushes the space program to twenty years in the future?
NASA came up with a variation on Ares using existing Space Shuttle engines, tanks, and solid rocket boosters. It would work, without the problem of having parts of your lander below the falling ice from the LOX tank. But the President isn't interested in it, so it goes away!
This article made me think how NASA does their jobs.
